Playground work party October 17th, 24th & 25th

We need your help Saturday, Oct 17th

We'll be coming together for "socially distanced" work party assembling the new playground climbers, preparing the garden for winter, as well as planting more plants in the Natural Play Area. Unlike previous work parties, all volunteers will need to sign up for a shift in advance as part of SPS COVID guidelines.

SIGN UP HERE!

How do you do a Socially-Distant Work Party?
We've developed the following plans together with Seattle Public Schools:

  • We've divided up the work into three areas of the school yard: assembling the new play structures, planting in the Natural Play Area, and cleaning up the garden. We'll work in shifts with only 5 volunteers in each area at a time. Since we will be limited to 15 volunteers at a time, we need everyone to sign-up in advance.

  • We'll all do our best to keep physically distanced while working.

  • Everyone is required to wear a mask while on site.

  • We'll have two hand washing stations

  • We won't have any refreshments this year, so bring your own water bottle.

  • We're limiting Saturday to just adults, but we're hoping families will sign-up to help with additional work the next two weekends. Check out the sign-up sheet for details.

Playground Phase 1 Finished!

Work Party!

We did it! The new Hawthorne play space is open!

Over 200 students, family members, Hawthorne staff, and community members braved the rain to put the finishing touches on the first phase of the new playground. We moved mountains of wood chips, planted hundreds of plants and trees, weeded the garden, and cleaned up the entire school yard so it will be open to our students! And though VERY wet, we worked together with a lot of laughter and smiles! Thank you all for your contributions. I am so proud to be a part of this amazing community!

Please visit the school and check out what we accomplished together, or check out some photos on the Playground Page.

No need to get school supplies!

SchoolSuppliesforAll_FOH.jpg

We hope you and your kids are having a fantastic summer. We want to remind you that there’s no need to go shopping for school supplies! For the third year in a row, Friends of Hawthorne has purchased all supplies for all classrooms in all grades.

We need your help to sustain this effort from year to year.

It costs about $40 per student to provide all the pencils, pens, paper and many other supplies teachers and students need. Please give what you can. Smaller and larger contributions are welcome.

If you choose to give online, you can make your gift by clicking the “Please Give to Our School Supplies Fund Today” link on our school supplies page.

You can also drop off a check made out to Friends of Hawthorne in the office or at the Back to School BBQ on Friday, September 6, 2019 at 5:30-7 p.m.

Thanks for your support!

About this project

We’re making improvements in this area for people walking and biking. The NSF program funds projects requested by the community.

Stay Involved

We are committed to keeping you informed during construction. Feel free to visit the project’s website to learn more—details will be posted there as soon as possible. We also encourage you to share this information with anyone who may be interested and invite them to sign up for our email list.

A big thank you from Family Support Specialist Acquinetta Williams

Below is a letter from Acquinetta Williams, the Family Support Specialist at Hawthorne Elementary, thanking Friends of Hawthorne as well as School Staff and other community members for their support. At a recent FOH PTA meting, it was mentioned that about 10% of students at Hawthorne experience some form of homelessness.

Over the years FOH has served several families at Hawthorne Elementary. As the Family Support Worker, I am thankful for the relationship we have and the partnership we have built in supporting our school community. Students and families have benefited from generous contributions that changed their lives considerably. Funds for homeless families have been used for deposits so families can move into temporary/permanent housing, to pay monthly rent when parents have lost their jobs, to secure payment on utility bills, to purchase blankets, heaters and bedding, and to provide food and clothing to keep them warm during the winter months.

Most recently, FOH assisted in securing shelter for two of our homeless families, which turned out to be the best gift ever. I must tell you how thankful I am to be a part of such a fabulous group of people. In addition, donations were provided from Hawthorne’s awesome staff and members of their families. As a collective group we secured motel accommodations for two weeks. When I went to the motel to deliver hot meals and gifts, it warmed my heart to see the smiles on the kids’ faces. All the kids were nestled up in one room; they had warmth, a TV, a refrigerator, and a microwave that I had requested from the motel. Additionally, the kids received tablets, Kindles, toys, and clothes from several very generous donors. The families were overwhelmed with appreciation, and it provided me with such a sense of fulfillment and relief that I could then go and enjoy my own family.

Your contributions make a difference. Every family needs a home and every child needs a place to feel safe and secure. Children who have a sense of “belonging” are free to learn, explore, and dream without fear.

On behalf of Hawthorne staff, students and families…..Thank you Thank you Thank you!

Yours truly,

Acquinetta Williams

FOH fills funding gap for kindergarten reading software

iRead software

Because of school district budget cuts, Hawthorne started the 2017-18 school year more than $1,000 shy of the funds needed for adaptive software that helps young learners become better readers.

Friends of Hawthorne PTA helped fill that gap. Now every kindergartner at Hawthorne access to iRead software, a tool for that helps all kiddos improve their reading skills — especially those whose first language is not English.

You can help us meet more emerging classroom needs like this by giving to Friends of Hawthorne PTA.

Hawthorne is starting a Lego Robotics Club!

We are starting 2 Lego Robotics Clubs for Hawthorne Students!

One will meet on Mondays right after school at Hawthorne, likely 2:45pm-4:00pm.  The other will meet on Saturday mornings from 10:00am-11:30am at the SE Family Services building in Columbia City.  Each club will meet weekly, and build programmable lego robots.  We expect kids to work in groups of 3-4, and each group will have a parent coach.  If your child can join us, please register with Dave Schumacher: daveschu00@gmail.com, 206-856-9569.  He'll need their name, age and guardian contact information.  Also, we can use more parent volunteers!  Please let Dave know if you can volunteer to be a parent coach.  You would need to be present for club meetings, and run through the project once before the each club meeting.  Children of parents who are volunteering will get priority, and then we will take the first 20 kids who register for each club.  After that we'll form a waitlist.  We are planning to officially kick off in January, but we may have some casual sessions in December.  These kits look like a lot of fun!

Please reach out to Dave Schumacher with any questions.
