About Friends of hawthorne pta

Learn how to Become a Friend of Hawthorne. More information about FOH is here, including our current FOH board and meeting info. The FOH committees are the backbone of our group and are responsible for staff appreciation, playground maintenance and improvement, organizing school events and more!

FOH passes a budget each May with input from Hawthorne admin, teachers and YOU. We help fund staff positions, in-school programs and events and more. Check out the FOH budget key highlights and the detailed budget here.

Fundraising plays a vital role in providing Hawthorne students with the resources they need. Our fundraising committee works hard all year long on activities like selling spirit wear, holding raffles and organizing our in-person school auction. More information on FOH’s fundraising efforts can be found here or you can make a one-time or recurring donation.

Communication

Teacher/classroom

  • Each teacher chooses different forms of communication including email, text messages or an app-based program

  • Many teachers use “take home” folders that can be found in your student’s backpack - they may contain forms needing signatures, completed work for review or homework

  • Contact your student’s teacher if you are not receiving regular communications

Friends of Hawthorne

  • Hawthorne may also call with pre-recorded messages containing school and event information

Lunch

Classes eat together in the cafeteria on shared lunch tables. The Hawthorne school lunch menu can be found here and cafeteria fees can be paid online through School Pay. Breakfast and lunch are free for those families who qualify. Contact Principal Flavors for more information.

Students can bring their own lunch. Food containing nuts can be eaten in the cafeteria, but students are asked not to share due to allergy concerns. Lunch boxes are gathered in the classroom each morning and then carried to/from the cafeteria for the lunch period. Please mark and label your student’s lunchbox.

Classroom snacks

Most teachers serve a snack during the school day with families providing the classroom snacks. Teachers will notify families of any allergies within the classroom and usually request nut-free snacks. Classroom snacks should be individually-wrapped and easy to eat. Some examples are small bags of goldfish and granola bars.

Volunteers and visitors

All volunteers and school visitors must check in with the front office. Please enter through the main doors along Cascadia street and proceed directly to the front office.

To volunteer in a classroom, chaperone a field trip or work independently with students, you must be a registered SPS volunteer. The SPS Volunteer portal can be found here and you must renew every two years. Please call the front office with any questions.

Lost and Found

  • Label all your student’s items - coats and jackets, gloves/mittens, water bottles and lunch boxes, etc .

  • The lost and found is located in the cafeteria. Please check for missing items regularly.

  • FOH maintains the lost and found and cleans it out several times a year. Families are notified to collect lost and found items by a deadline with remaining items being donated.
