Co-President

The president is the presiding officer, the official spokesperson and the primary contact for Friends of Hawthorne. The president presides at all meetings and plans community and board meeting agendas with the PTA secretary. Co-Presidents are ex officio members of all committees.  An effective president brings a vision and drive for the work, helping provide strategic direction for the board and community.

  • Attend various WSPTA role trainings, as required (virtual)

  • Convenes and attends Monthly School Admin Meetings

  • Plans and attends monthly Board/Community Meetings (~1.5 hrs)

  • Attends assorted committee meetings, as relevant 

  • Formalized fiduciary responsibilities

  • Participate and volunteer regularly in school events

  • Update documentation as necessary for smooth transition to new board

Estimated commitment is 4 hours per week, or 16 hours per month, for each person. This fluctuates notably with upcoming meetings, events, and other deadlines.


Co-Vice President

The vice president shares the work of the president in leading or overseeing teams, and presides over meetings when co-presidents are not available. The vice president often oversees a committee or may oversee another area as determined by the current team. 

  • Attend WSPTA role training (virtual)

  • Shadow and support Co-Presidents in their roles (can divide / share duties and roles as desired) 

  • Lead 1-2 committees or special projects

  • Intention of serving as co-president in the following year

  • Participate and volunteer regularly in school events

  • Update documentation as necessary for smooth transition to new board

Estimated commitment is 3 hours per week, or 12 hours per month, for each person. This fluctuates with upcoming meetings, events, and other deadlines.

The treasurer holds the critical role of overseeing and managing the financial operations of the PTA. The role tracks incoming and outgoing funds, manages the budget, complies with tax and other business deadlines, and presents budget updates at board and general meetings. This position is great for someone who loves attention to detail and spreadsheets.

  • Attend WSPTA role training (virtual)

  • Attend and prep for monthly Board/Community Meetings (~1.5 hrs)

  • Update all pertinent documents on FOH Google drive

  • Provide any necessary updates for monthly announcements

  • Participate and volunteer in school events as time permits

  • Update documentation as necessary for smooth transition to new board

Co-Role, estimated commitment is 4 hours per week, or 16 hours per month, for each person. This may fluctuate with upcoming meetings, events, and other deadlines.


The secretary is responsible for record keeping. This includes sending meeting notices, maintaining orderly files, helping prepare meeting agendas with the president, highlighting unfinished business, and taking meeting minutes at board and general membership meetings.  This position works well for someone who listens well, takes great notes, and follows through.

  • Attend WSPTA role training (virtual)

  • Attend and prep for monthly Board/Community Meetings including taking minutes, reviewing minutes for approval

  • Responsible for running the motion/voting process during PTA meetings

  • Update all pertinent documents on FOH Google drive

  • Lead of FOH bank account from a paperwork perspective. Has signing rights but Treasurer's manage all details for money.

  • Owner of the "Secretary Binder"

    • Participate and volunteer in school events as time permits

    • Update documentation as necessary for smooth transition to new board

Co-Role, estimated commitment is 1-2 hours per week, or 4-8 hours per month, for each person. This fluctuates with upcoming meetings, events, and other


The advocacy chair role helps our community stay informed and engaged, and ensures that the voices of our students and families are heard by the leaders who make decisions that impact our school. They serve as the link between PTA Policy Priorities at the state and local  levels, and the concerns of our local members. 

  • Conducts outreach to Hawthorne community to understand community concerns and priorities

  • Manages  and guides advocacy committee of other community members, and leads associated committee meetings, as relevant 

  • Represents FOH at various state, district and local meetings, as relevant

  • Informs community of advocacy opportunities related to upcoming legislation, School Board meetings, proposed SPS policy changes, etc.

  • Plans and attends monthly Board/Community Meetings (~1.5 hr)

  • Update documentation as necessary for smooth transition to new board

Estimated commitment is 2 hours per week, or 8 hours per month, for each person. This fluctuates with upcoming meetings, events, and other deadlines.


This role can be handled by an individual or a group of individuals.

  • Email communications – We need a volunteer to help with our email communications, including the monthly newsletter and additional emails as needed.

  • Social media –  Several posts per week, mostly to the FOH Facebook page working with other PTA board members and the school administration to share about events, volunteer opportunities, and other important information.

  • Website editor – help with regular updates to our website. This will include homepage, and other page updates as needed.

Estimated commitment is 1 hour per week, or 4 hours per month, for each person. This fluctuates with upcoming meetings, events, and other deadlines.


Any of these roles can be filled with a Co-lead or Co-chair in order to distribute the responsibilities. We encourage folks who are interested in volunteering but may have limited time to recruit a friend, neighbor, or community member to join them in a co-role!
